Free SVG Files Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

► What is a SVG File?

So what’s an SVG file and why is it important to know how to make them? SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. The lines in SVG are very precise. They will not lose any quality if they are resized very large for a giant sign or very tiny to put on a coffee mug or make a delicate flower.

This makes SVGs the preferred file to use for our cutting machine projects. The things you can do in Cricut Design Space or other cutting machine software is very limited. But once you know how to make SVG files the possibilities are endless.

► What are the benefits of using SVG File formats?

If nothing else, SVG file formats have proven to become a major ally among Cricut and Silhouette cutting machine users, image printing companies, as well as media groups. This is due to their many benefits, which include:

  • Scalability. With standard files like GIF or JPEG, scaling a picture up or down will result in a loss of quality. SVG files won’t lose quality and can be scaled up or down to the size that you need.
  • Easy Editing. SVGs are unique in the sense that they can be edited in classic programs like Adobe, but also can be edited in a text editor thanks to its XML coding.
  • Linking. You can also add linking, metadata, and scripting to an SVG file if you so choose. This makes them great for responsive website design.
  • Scripting. Much like HTML, SVG file formats allow people to program scripts inside the images. This makes it easier to code websites using this format, and also lets you add cool features to your site’s design—much like CSS.
  • Fast Loading. Due to the code-based way that SVGs are made, using them in web design means that you’ll get a faster-loading site.

In order to locate your downloaded files you need to access your “Downloads Folder”. If you are using Windows the folder is usually located on the drive where Windows is installed (for example, C: usersyournamedownloads). You can also do a search using the word “Downloads”. If you are a Mac user you click on the Finder which will lead you to “Downloads”

► How do I Unzip the Free SVG File downloaded Folder?

The files are inside a zipped folder. Once you have downloaded the zipped folder, you must unzip the folder to access the files inside the folder. On Windows and Mac this can be done by double clicking on the zipped folder, or on Windows, you can also right click on the folder and choose extract.
For Android phones, iPhone and iPad, you will need an app to do so. Unzip apps can be found on both the App Store and Google Play.

► Can I re-download my Free SVG Files designs?

Absolutely. Logging in to your Donvitodesign.Store Account and clicking “Downloads” will allow you to access the purchased designs. You can download any item 5 times.

► There wasn’t a SVG File in the Zip Folder?

All designs have a SVG File included. The svg sometimes adopts the icon of the browser that you download it from.

This happens because your computer wants to open the SVG file as a web browser file instead of an image file for the simple fact that SVG images actually ARE web files. That’s just part of what makes an SVG so special and useful.

Windows comes with all sorts of default settings, including which program should open what type of file. So if it reads a file as being made up of web code… then it likely thinks the ‘appropriate’ program is a web browser, and that’s what will be selected by default to open it.

Please upload the SVG file with the browser icon to your software as you normally would, it should work just fine. You can also identify the SVG by the file name, which ends in .svg
